I would say that across is the better word. Jackets don't fit between the shoulders, they fit across the shoulders. i.e. from one side to the other.
Between is used to describe the space separating two objects (shoulders in this case).
While the meanings are close, they are not the same.
1--------------2 = between
_______________ = across
1........................2
(I hope it's clear - I had to but the dots in to separate the numbers.) |
