I don't know how I can describe this structure in English..
But I need to know how to interpret it.

I'm teaching some kids in English school but sometimes I face with very confusing matter like this one.

I understand how to use and interpret look watch listen ... like those stuff

but it's very strange to me to use SMELL.

One of students gave me the sentence like 'She smelled her mother cooking.

I know what he intended to say but it's kind of strange to me.

Is it correct? I thnk it means she smelled her mother, not her food.
Can I say She smelled her mother cooking while my mom is cooking?

Thank you

She smelled her mother's cooking is the correct way to say it.
