I saw the #1 in an English book, but I don't think #1 is correct.
I think #2 is right but I'm not sure. Can you tell me which one is right?

If you are talking about something in the distant past you would use how was it? |

Number 1 is correct.
How is it that, last Thursday, you did X?
Unless therre's a good reason to use How is it that Why serves the same purpose and is shorter. |
