Hi,
What does the blue part mean in the following snetneces?
Quote: |
Chinese historically have shown themselves quite willing to accept all sorts of foreign cultural products and ways,...Moreover, at a more deliberative level and indeed as a matter of policy, the Cinese ruling class (outstandingly during the T'ang dynasty) might adopt a foreign style of dress, learn a foreig language, and establish kinship ties through marriage, so as to better influence and control what were called ''allied tribes.'' |
I cannot decide the defintions of the word 'deliberative' after I looked it up.
Thank you very much for your help! |

Deliberative means: involving discussion or consideration.
at a more deliberative level is completely unnecessary in this sentence.
What matters is: as a matter of policy
Here's the gist of it :
During their history the Chinese have been willing to accept foreign culture. As a matter of policy, especially during the T'ang dynasty, the Chinese ruling class might adopt a foreign style of dress, learn a foreign language and establish kinship ties through marriage, so as to influence and control "allied tribes". |

Thank you very much, pugachevV, as usual. I had the same doubt when I read this phrase, there seemed to lack something to be compared with. Now, I get the picture of it. Thanks! |
