Hello,everyone.
I use BBC Learning English for my self-paced English learning project.
I got confused when I read the article "succession"
It said that:"Yes, it was to a controversial law that banned future monarchs from marrying Catholics. Previously, if they did, they would be ruled out of succession."
My question is why British royal members can't marry with Catholics?
Would you please tell me the reason?
Thanks for you help!
Best wishes,

The short answer is that the Church of England broke away from the Pope and Roman Catholic Church in the 16th century. In 1701, the policy was passed that anyone in the British line of succession who is Roman Catholic, becomes Roman Catholic, or marries a Roman Catholic, can not succeed to the throne.
