Am I right in assuming "work off" in A and B are the same in meaning?
A. The clock works off [on] two small batteries.
B. Huge advances in technology, the argument goes, can enable doctors from different hospitals, different fields and even in different states to work off a single electronic file that would include every medical decision and diagnosis in a given patients history. _________________ Hiromichi |

They have slightly different meanings.
A. The clock works on/off two small batteries.
It uses two small batteries as an energy source.
B. Doctors work off a single electronic file.
Doctors can access and use a single electronic (data) file for all their medical records and diagnosis information.
