1. Is the quotation the same meaning as " This psychology is not only projection but also the same kind of thinking conforms to the way society works."?
2. Does 'projection' mean 'something that we imagine to have particular qualities because of our wishes or feelings'?

I think you've understood it very well.
Projection : the attribution of one's own ideas, feelings, or attitudes to other people or to objects; especially : the externalization of blame, guilt, or responsibility as a defense against anxiety.
