No.
catch implies either (1) that the book was falling off the shelf, and he was trying to prevent it from landing on the floor, or (2) someone threw the book at him.
reach is what you want. It implies that no matter how much he stretched his arm, or stood on a chair, or whatever, he could not lay hold of the book.
