The following are my questions:

The essence of love in marriage is response ___1___ kindness, without worrying about what is owed to oneself.
(A) in (B) with (C) to (D) for

The answer given is (B), but I think it should be (C).

Sad ___2___ Wilbur was, he protected Charlottes eggs as if they were his own because Wilbur knew that he ___3___ killed if Charlotte had not come up with the idea of spinning words in her web.
2. (A) although (B) when (C) with (D) as
3. (A) would have been (B) would be (C) should (D) might be

The answers to questions 2 and 3 are (A) and (D) respectively, but I think they should be (D) to question 2 and (A) to question 3.

Please help me with these problems. Thanks a lot.

Hello www0935, the first one is correct response with kindness because you are the one responding so you respond with kindness. So B is correct. As for your second question, it is a story and it was written that way. It does not sound correct and I would definitely NOT suggest you use this form but from a literary standpoint it is correct. It is a form of Old English. Novelists like to use words differently. I hope this helps.

Actually, www0935, I think your idea of the answers for 2 and 3 would also be correct. Without knowing the original, you would have no way of knowing which one was right, in my opinion.
