Im interested in the use of punctuation.

Which is more common, #1 or #2, below?
1. "This is outrageous," he shouted, "this should stop!"
2. "This is outrageous," he shouted. "This should stop!"

I have long thought #2 is, but I recently found that *a style book published here in Japan recommends #1. What do you think?
(*from p.9 of Tsunezo Sasais EnglishStyle-book from Kenkyusha-publishing, 1999, Tokyo, Japan)

Hi FW in 1 you have a comma in 2 you have a period. If you use the period then you must use the Capital letter to start the next sentence. Both are OK just look at the period or comma after he shouted.

Any copy editor in the U.S. given sentence no. 1 would change it to no. 2.

Here is why: If you rewrote it to run the first and second parts within one quotation, then you would not punctuate with a comma. You would use a period:

He shouted, "This is outrageous. This should stop!"
