Dear teachers,
Would you please tell me when we can use "the + comparative adjective" instead of "the + superlative" (like "the closer", "the nearer") apart from the parallel construction "the sooner, the better" ?
Or is it a faulty construction ?
Would you please give me examples ?
Many thanks,

It is possible.
For example:
"There are two elephants here. The bigger one is friendly, but the smaller one is aggressive."
Hope helps,
