I don't understand last sentence. Would you paraphrase it for me?

It was a different reality than the one described by a number of the Republican candidates. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas best captured the sentiment at a Republican Jewish Coalition forum in Washington on Thursday morning. “All of us are deeply concerned that this is yet another manifestation of terrorism, radical Islamic terrorism here at home,” he said.
For both parties, there is a grim view of a clear and present danger. But precisely which danger depends on which candidates were talking, and which voters they hoped to reach.

Well I can only guess, but it would seem that the clear and present danger could either be muslim homegrown terrorists at home, or the danger of making all muslims take the blame for a very few and therefore losing them their rights as citizens.

Lorikeet:
Let me ask you in another way.

But precisely which danger depends on which candidates were talking, and which voters they hoped to reach.

The above sentence can be rewritten as below?

But precisely which danger depends on which danger that candidates were talking, and depends on which voters whom they hoped to reach.

Well I think the way it was in the original was best, but you could say "But precisely which danger depends on which danger the candidates were talking about, and which voters they hoped to reach."

I left out the second "depends on" because you don't have to repeat it twice, and I left out the "that" and "whom" because they're not necessary if it's an object, and I think it flows better without them.

hiromichi,

It CANNOT be rewritten that way.

"But precisely which danger depends on which candidates were talking"

What this means is that each candidate had a different idea of what he/she considered to be a "danger".

To be clear, both parties agree that there is a clear and present danger. However, not all candidates agree exactly what that "danger" is. One candidate believes X is the "clear and present danger" while another candidate thinks Y is the "clear and present danger".

"and which voters they hoped to reach."

Of course, in full, this can be written as "But precisely which danger depends on which voters they hoped to reach."

Politicians speak to different demographics differently. They will highlight what they feel is important for each group. So they might say that X is a danger when talking to Group A and that Y is a danger when talking to Group B.

Thank you very much.
