We can use How many of for countable. But I read a book. It says we can't use how much of for uncountable. Is this correct?

Actually, I think "How much of the meat is from America?" and "How much of the water is clean?" are both okay. I don't know the exact quote from the book, and whether that would make a difference or not. What book was it? Perhaps it was for British English. Sometimes there are different usages. It sounds fine to me (American English.)
On second thought, if the water was all in one lake, for example, you couldn't ask how much is clean because it would be all mixed together. However, if there were a lot of glasses of water and some of them had been purified and some not, I think it would work. Also, if there is one piece of meat, it wouldn't work. But if there was a shipment of meat and half of it came from one country and the other half from another, it would work. So instead of a rule, perhaps it just depends on the context. |
