I think there is something missing in the quote. It seems like it should be "without the cushion of a music ------." Maybe "without the cushion of a music producer?"
Whatever it is, "cushion" is very similar to "protection." That might be the intended meaning, or it might be slightly different - maybe something like "advantage." |

I agree. Perhaps "support" would be a good substitute in this case, but it is slighlty unusual. Cushion, usually has the idea of protection or softening.
"It's lucky I fell on you and not the road. You cushioned my fall." (softened) |

Maybe it means that the music video was not copy-protected?
In which case people could freely copy it, but even so, it still sold many copies. |

Hmm... MissD, did you edit the original post, adding "video" to the end of the sentence? I could have sworn that the sentence ended with "music" when I read it the first time.
"Without the cushion of a music video" is implying that having a music video helps boost the sales of the CD. So in this case, cushion could be thought of as padding/boost/help/support/advantage/etc. A lot of nouns would fit there. |

Ummm....Mr. B, I sure did edit it. It was such a blaring mistake. I edited it right after I had noticed it. Thanks for bringing up the something missing.

Whew... Then I'm not (necessarily) losing my mind then!
Thanks, MissD. |
