Another question: Did he sing the song to the crowd, in this case?

The song is from the musical "Grease".
Sigh... great, now I'm gonna have that song stuck in my head all day. |

Your definition is correct.
"... rallying... in a rendition..." tells us that he did sing the song to the crowd. Many verbs could have been used in place of "rally." |
