Nice to see you again.
All I can speak about is panicking. The few English verbs that end with a vowel and then a "c" (and I think all of them probably end in "ic") need the "k" with "-ing" (and "-ed") to preserve the hard "c" sound. Otherwise, it would look like it should be a soft "c" sound... Almost always, "c" or "g" followed by "i" or "e" is a soft sound. Otherwise, it is a hard sound.
