B: You mean "climbing" as *in* "climbing the stairs," right?
Is "in" necessary in B's words?

Yes, That's what I would write.
The other possibility hinted at, is climbing the outside of the building and so that is the reason for B"s remark. |

The other "as in" I can think of are:
F as in Frank, p as in Paul, a as in apple, and s as in Sam.
