Is acquisition the noun form of acquire? Inquiry is the noun and inquire is the verb, what about inquisition? That isn't the noun form of inquire, isn't it?
Thanks.

you make me think about things
i wouldn't normally think about!
if you acquire (V) something, it becomes the acquisition (N). so, yes.
inquire = verb
inquisition IS a noun, but speaking of something that you INQUIRED about is normally referred to as an INQUIRY (N). or query (N).
but maybe someone else has better insight?

I agree. Heh heh, more wacky English.
LEt's see,
Inquire (V) is to ask;
Inquiry (N) is what you ask;
Inquisition (N) is the process of asking the questions. (No one expects the Spanish Inquisition!) |

Heh, whenever I hear "The Inquisition", I'm less apt to think of Torquemada and more likely to think of a Monty Python skit or Mel Brooks' song with synchronized swimming nuns from History of the World, Pt I. |

Many centuries ago in Spain, the Catholics rooted out all the people of other religions through torture, killing, and exile. I believe when a person was suspected of not being a Christian, he would be taken in for questioning (an inquisition) to determine the truth. I belive that this may have lasted for decades. |

Thanks, but now I have a new question. There are only two branches of Christianity, Catholics and Protestants, right? |

Russian Orthodox, Greek Orthodox, Mormons, Seventh Day Adventists, Methodists, Church of England, Presbyterian, Jehovah's Witnesses; are just a few of the different divisions of the Christian faith.
Even the believers can't agree on what it is they believe. |
