A school of jellyfish swimming by, then a school of them *silhouetted* aganist the sunlight.
to cause somebody or something to appear surrounded by light ?

Could anyone explain more?

Yes, you're right. And you can not see the details of something that is silhouetted, only the overall form. When one thinks of a silhouette, they usually imagine someone in a window at night with the room well-lit, and a shade or sheer curtain covering the window. From outside, you can see the outline of the person very clearly, but that is all. The form is filled with blackness.
