Is "waterfall" also mostly used in singular, unlike it's synonyous "falls"? |

a waterfall is a natural flow of water that flows down over a cliff or hill. if there are more than one waterfall or there are several of them together, use the plural waterfalls. the word waterfall is a compound word and is always used together.
if you were visiting Niagra Falls in canada (there are 2 waterfalls together), and you said "look at that fall," that wouldn't make any sense. if you said "look at that water," you could be referring to the amount of water that was there, but not specifically the waterfall.

Not necessarily. You can say "waterfalls" if you are refering to many single waterfalls not directly related to each other.
For example, you can say:
There are many beautiful waterfalls in the Havasupai Reservation, each about a 1/2-mile hike from the next.
"Falls" will often refer to one large fall divided up or several falls all in a series close together.
For example,
Yosemite Falls is on the north side of Yosemite valley, but Bridalveil Fall (singular, no "s") is on the south side of the valley. |
