first : what is linux ?
at the begining of the computer age , and from the first OSs was called Unix, of course it was not the same as modern unix, it was command lines only.
why it was called unix? the word "uni" that means "one" + "X" which refers to the letters "ics" for the plural. so it is unix.
on the begining of the 1990s , linus , who invented linux , made changes in unix , changes in the programming and made it free and open source.
why it was called linux? the word "linu" from linus' name and the "x" because unix ends with "x". _________________ C++ Programmer |

second: why linux?
as windows is the first graphical OS , it appeared from the begining that it'll be bad! , the first version of windows 1984 was too bad , slow and even the DOS was better and people at that time prefared to use DOS , even the second version , was worse , so Bill Gates and programmers in microsoft brought the code of the DOS and added the graphics , that was on the third version 3.0 , then on the version 3.2 appeared the multitask option , then win95 and win98 all of them were the same but a little bit better, then WinMe , which is a black spot on Microsoft's history, it has many problems. but at that time Microsoft was a great name. so it tried to do some evel action , for example the automatic updates or even the updating monitors your computer. and also the firewall get spywares. in the addition , windows is slow , viruses are invited every day .you format every week . and you must install 2 versions because maybe one of them has a problem.
Linux : faster than XP , you only put one installation . you don't format at all . no viruses enter . no spywares . it is recommended for servers . no server uses windows.
windows : slow , put more than one installation . format weekly . viruses are invited every day . spywares are included . strongly recommened that you dont use it in servers.
Linux : free , no charge.
windows : buy with 900$. _________________ C++ Programmer |

third: where can i get Linux?
there are many editions for linux. we have "mandrake" , "slax" , debian" , "redhat" , "fedora" , "slackware" , "SuSE" , and many more.
why? : because it is open source , you can get its code , make changes and publish your copy with your name.
every edition have its own website. but there is a website that have all editions or most of them .
http://www.LinuxISO.org/
i recommend you to download the lastest version of "fedora linux" which is 4 CDs and you can download for iso image the DVD CDs.
before you download , download with a program called "Download Acclerator plus (DAP)" , you can find it on http://www.download.com/ _________________ C++ Programmer |

after you download the ISO file , you burn this ISO image in CD-RW using Nero or any other software. the CD is bootable.
dont try to install it now , you must now what you are doing first , its way of installing is diffrent form windows. _________________ C++ Programmer |

fourth: what does linux need before installation?
linux needs 2 partitions , one of them is formated as Linux swap and the other is formated as Linux ext2 .
the swap partition is less than 2GB , and the ext2 is more than 2GB.
don't worry about the partitioning . you can do partitioning during the installation.
when you enter the CD1 of fedora core linux 3 , a screen will appear to you , press enter . then when the blue screen appears select the button SKIP , then wait till the graphical screen appears .
first it 'll ask you to select language , then it will ask you for partitioning . select "manualy partitioning with disk druid" then next . the partitions will appear to you in a list . double click on an empty partition and select format partition as "swap" . then double click on another empty partition and select format partition as "ext2" and the mount point is "\" .
click next . then it'll ask you to select the boot loader , if you have any other OSs select change boot loader then select no boot loader. if you have no OSs click next . then it'll ask you about the country , language , softwares . then it'll begin installation .
after installation if you didn't select a bootloader make a bootable floppy Disk .
then reboot . then in the firsts run , it will search for hardwares and ask you some questions to collect information.
after that .. Linux is ready on your PC ...
enjoy ..... _________________ C++ Programmer |

Slax Linux
SLAX is fast and beautiful Linux operating system which fits on small (3.14") CD-ROM disc. It runs directly from the CD (or USB) without installing. The Live CD described here is based on the Slackware Linux distribution and uses Unification File System (also known as unionfs), allowing read-only filesystem to behave as a writable one, saving all changes to memory.
Imagine the ability to boot your favorite Linux distribution whether you are at home, at school, or at work. Imagine walking on the street and carrying the only thing you needed in life - the 8cm compact disk with your Live Linux CD. Wouldn't you want to experience such a feeling?
When your computer boots from the LiveCD, the first step is loading the kernel image (vmlinuz). After this, a 4 MB ramdisk is created in the computer's RAM. The rootdisk image (initrd.gz) is then unpacked into it and mounted as a root filesystem. Large directories (like /usr) are mounted directly from the CDROM. _________________ C++ Programmer |
