I like to know how to use the captioned phrase. Can I use like this?
I layed him on the butter.

English-Japanese dictionaries in Japan do not give us enough information

I think "lay on the butter" is a way of saying "butter up" someone.

butter up = flattery/praise.....usually to get somthing (like buttering up

the boss to get a raise)

So, in your example (I layed him on the butter)........"I layed the butter

on him" might be a way of saying "I buttered him up".

p.s. - Sorry about my last post ........"bad day at the office + a 3 martini lunch"? feeble excuse

Philo Kevetch sensei, Thank you very much.

PS I also regret my over-emotional response. Let it be water under the bridge.
