The Tour de France started July 1, with a 7.1-km individual time trial as the prologue. Thor Hushovd (Norway, Team Credit Agricole) won the yellow jersey by less than a second.
In Stage 1 on July 2, Hushovd was in the hunt at the final bunch sprint when his arm was cut by a large cardboard hand held by a spectator. Jimmy Casper (France, Cofidis) won the stage but George Hincapie (U.S.A., Discovery Channel) took the yellow jersey.
As I am writing this, Stage 2 is in progress, with two Spanish riders in the lead, nearly 6 minutes ahead of the field with 73 km left to go of the 228.5-km stage. The leaders: David de la Fuente (Saunier Duval) and Aitor Hernandez (Euskatel).
This is one of the greatest sport events in the world, and perhaps the most difficult. All the cyclists are excellent athletes, and both individual and team tactics, as well as sportsmanship and tradition, come into play every moment.
