Hi, there.
I have read:
Hit singles. This isn't a call to commit bettery on the unwed, it's a metaphor from baseball.
What's "This isn't a call to commit bettery on the unwed"? Can you explain that to me. I don't get it.

Yes, the word is battery. This word has several meanings, and the one that works here is
battery - the act of hitting or beating
Singles also has several meanings, and you need to know 2 of them to understand this joke.
1. singles - unwed people; people who are not married (and, possibly, people who are not seriously involved with someone else)
2. singles - (in baseball or softball) - hits (of the ball) that let the batter get safely to first base
The writer wants the second kind of singles to be hit, not the first kind! He or she is playing with the language. |
