Hi,

1. He had done nothing except ________some books in the reading room.
A. read; B. to read
I think both of them are correct. Am I right?

2. When _______, he kept silent.
A. being asked; B. asked
I guess A is correct. What do you say?

3. I never expected the shoes _________so soon.
A. to be worn out; B. to have worn out.
It seems to me that both of them are correct. Do you agree?

Thanks.
Tony

1. A. read

2. B. asked

3. Both are correct, I think, but people would be more likely to say, "I never expected these shoes to wear out so soon / to be worn out so soon." Although "to have worn out" is grammatically correct, it sounds too stuffy for conversation.
