In my class about America at university, I have a presentation. And theme of my group is "Taking freedom For Granted". Of course I researched information about it but I still don't know the actual conditions and I want to know the truth. So, please give me real info!
*Are you really think that you live in a country of freedom everyone say?
*Do you think America doesn't have freedom which other countries have? If you think so, which country?
*a book said "Americans don't know our own history"... is it true?
*Do you feel the government control or threaten people's freedom rescently? or after 911? For example...freedom of speech |

Mostly, yes. In public, there are often reasonable limits based on community standards (obsenity laws, noise ordinences, and so on). But basically anyone can legally express their opinion (but don't be surprised if you lose your friends when you do!).

The legal (alcohol) drinking age is higher in most states of the U.S. than in many countries. For example, at age 20, you can buy beer in Japan and most European countries, but not in the U.S.

IMHO, Yes.

Yes, but not for what you think.
The Campaign Reform Bill sponsored by senators John McCain (Republican of Arizona) and Russ Feingold (Democrat of Wisconsin) attempts to limit the raising and spending of funding on political campaigns which reduces how much free speech you have to get out your message if you want to campaign for political office or for a political cause. This will protect sitting politicians against potential challengers who are not as well known. This is very undemocratic and an attack on our political freedom. _________________ "It is impossible to speak in such a way that you cannot be misunderstood." -- Karl Popper |

Well, we are not in slavery and we have freedom of speech, definitely. We have much more freedom than other countries. My answer is yes.

Yes. Yes yes yes. Americans are not very smart and they don't know many things. They don't want to be smart, they just want to be rich. |

well there are different levels of freedom. the least free person is one who is a slave to another.
To be totally free, you would be able to do anything you want.
but to live with other people in a society you start to give up full freedom to survive as a group. So societies create laws, now if you break a law, your punishment is having a freedom removed from you. Like going to jail, you're no longer free to go anywhere you want, but you can still have other freedoms while you're there.
As a small child before you knew what freedom was, did you ever think about freedom in your country? your first experience with choices of freedom was when you got punished by your parents.
As you grew up you became more aware of the world outside, and then you compare your freedom with that of other countries.
So America has freedoms in some things that other countries do not have, and there are countries that have freedoms that America does not have.
Its better to think of individual freedoms, like free speech. free speech is not a freedom only in America. But in America we have drug laws that prohibit drug use, and its the same in most countries. But in areas of Denmark they have freedom to use some drugs so does it make them more free? |

I think for the most part Americans have as much freedom as other people, in some cases more.
I can't think of many freedoms that other people have that Americans don't have. Except for that the UK legalized gay marriage. In America its only legal in Massachusetts.
Also i think that cencorship laws are to strict. They don't cencor the press or anything, just use of obsenities on tv and radio and nudity on tv, radio, or in public. But the government has gone so far as to ban songs that use too many obsenities. That is something i think is ignoring the first Amendment, free speach.
Plus Canada had legalized medicinal marajauna. WHile America isn't even talking about it.
It is true that a lot of Americans don't know the US's history. They do teach it in school but some people just don't pay attention or just don't go to school. I heard that most Americans wouldn't be able to pass the test they give immigrants who want to become citizens because they don't know anything about the American Revolution or the American Civil War.
And i deffinatly think that the government was out of line when they were wire tapping peoples' telephones even if it was to protect us. |
