Is there any difference in use between "have" and "have got"?
I have an idea.
I've got an idea.
An acquaitance of mine has told me there's a subtle difference in meaning in the sentences above. Do you agree with that? Why? _________________ Stormy Weather.

Can we always use "got" after the verb "to have" (in the present simple tense) without changing the meaning of the sentence?
Do you think there might be regional differences (American X Canadian X British English) in the use of "have" and "have got"? I mean, I always thought British would rather use "have got", whereas Americans and Candians tend to use "have".
Thanks once more for your help, Asterix. _________________ Stormy Weather. |

"I have" and "I've got" are the same when talking about possesions:
I have a car.
I've got a car.
They're also the same when talking about obligations:
I have to study.
I've got to study.
But they are not the same when "have" is an auxiliary.
I've got a letter. (I possess a letter.)
I've got a letter. (I have received a letter.) _________________ I'm never going to learn if you don't correct my mistakes! |

And in American English, "I've gotten a letter." (So we can tell the difference. ) |

Eeesh!
I think myprofe meant "I have a letter. (I possess a letter.)" - and it's a good explanation given the question.
And Lorikeet is right about American English usage in this case. But sometimes American English is a bit clumsy.
Why not say:
"I have a letter."
"I received a letter."
The word "got" is unnecessary clutter here. _________________ Daniel
