Hello teacher,

what is the meaning of take in the following example

When the nurse pricked his heel he screamed
really loudly and then cried for the few minutes
it took for her to get enough blood for the test.

as i really confuse the meaning of take here

Thanks

Hi Hany,

Here, 'took' is part of the phrase 'the few minutes it took.' It describes a timespan, in this case a timespan of a few minutes.

We can also phrase it in this way: It 'took a few minutes' for her to get enough blood for the test.

Hope that helps.

Hi, hanygeorge38

It may help you if you break up the long sentence.

The nurse pricked his heel. He then screamed really loudly. Then he cried. It took her a few minutes to get enough blood for the test. He cried while she was doing this.

Does that help?
