Hello,

Why do we always say "I have plans (tonight)" even though sometimes we have only one thing planned?

Is it because it's a fixed expression?

Thank you,

Nawee

Yes, you can consider it to be a fixed expression.

Hi Nawee,

We often use the fixed expression to politely tell people we're not available tonight.

couple1: Say, do you want to go to the symphony with us tonight?
couple2: No, we have plans tonight.
couple1: Ok then, we'll see you next week.

Couple 2 does not have to explain why they're busy. It's understood that they just want to spend the night together alone.

Hmm I think it's understood that they don't want to go to the symphony, but I don't know if they want to spend the night together alone. They may already have tickets to something else.
