It sounds like donned, but it is dawned. It means that it suddenly occurred to him a month late, or it suddenly became apparent to him. When it dawns in the real world, the sun rises, and it is dawn, the beginning of the day. This use of dawn is obviously metaphorical.
By the way, there is a verb to don. It is a contraction of do on, and it means to put on clothes. "Don we now our gay apparel, fa la la, la la la, la, la, la." The opposite is doff, from do off. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb
