Surprised Hi! everyone. I am irene. I am a Taiwanese. I think it is so wonderful to share everyone's culture of your country. Therefore, I want to share the special Mid-Autumn Festival. Although it was past in this year, I think it is a good and important festival. People in Taiwan think the moon in that day is the fullest and brightest. Usually we have a barbecue in the park. Then we eat the pomelo and gaze the moon. We turn off all the light in order to let the moonlight illuminate the earth. It is so romantic. you can try to walk beneath the moonlight without any other light.

i hope i can share many things about the culture of my country with everyone and learn many other culture about other country.

Shocked When it was long time ago, Taiwan was one county of China. But in this NEW time, Taiwan is not a part of China. We are the people of Taiwan which called Taiwanese. Taiwan is an independent country.

C'mon, guys, this is not a political forum. We're discussing culture here. I'm from Taiwan, and I consider myself as Taiwanese, cause I speak Taiwanese (Southern Min) and Taiwanese Mandarin (which is not exactly the same as Pu-tong-hwa, you'll know it if you are a linguist.) If you think that I forget who my forefathers are, it only outstands your narrow politics-dominated mind. If you think that I should be Chinese, that is fine, cause I can accept its cultural/ethnic meaning. [ Isn't the population of Singapore mainly made up of Chinese, Malaysians and Indians?] And I enjoy our Chinese culture.
I wonder what Quebecois call themselves? And what their opinions are?

Quebecois would not call themselves purely Canadian that's for sure...Their pursuit for autonomy is what separates then from the rest of us Canadians, although, they really are no different, just distinct cultures, with a distinct background, social mores just like every other culture but noooooo...Everything has to be unique about them...I'm a lil bit edgy on this topic The Quebec sapartist notion has been carried on for many years now. If you ask any quebecois when they're independence is, they'll have a different date in mind.

Ciao!

You can never do whatever physical to make a person obey, at least that's what looks like from the outside. However, that's not a smart move. You can never suppress a person's free-will and change his/her national identity that he/she chooses.

It's kind of sad that Chinese people aren't familiar with the idea of individuality and freedom of choice. It's them-Taiwanese that have the choice to choose their own identity.

If you do try to change that, please, don't use force or verbal threats.
You could run them over with tanks but the hearts that long for freedom will LIVE ON.

Missdaredevil( who is already fed up with the excessive use of conformity in Taiwan society and simply can't stand to see more.)

Forgive such an opinionated reply from so new a member....but I believe Taiwan's independence to be quite obvious...granted, they have not yet formally declared it, but do you really need to? They have their own president, their own elections, their own military....I could go on and on...
It would appear that China is in denial over this matter Wink
I myself am all for Taiwanese independence...My girlfriend, along with many other friends, lives in Taipei. I don't know what changes would occur should Taiwan be "re-unified" with China, but I'm happy with it the way things are.
I hope I am not pouring gas on the "politicial-debate-which-shouldn't-be-in-the-cultural-thread" fire. I have very strong feelings regarding this subject.

I love your culture too, Irene. Sadly, I was not in Taiwan at the time of the Mid-Autumn Festival, although I did get to experience the Chinese New Year. Let's just say that my friends and I made a lot of noise Twisted Evil
