Strangely, when men tell me:"you are attractive", I always feel happy, even happier than when men tell me:"you are so intelligent."

I don't.

Hearing you're beautiful is something that happens every day. The average Brazilian man is very impolite; they believe they have the right to tell you "hey, you're hot" right on your face under daylight. And it's something that happens every single day, be it at the train station, or inside a bus, even at work (my ex-boss has just invited me to go out with him, although he knows I'm married; my current boss loves to make comments on the way I look - "oh, this shirt fits you really well"). Maybe Chinese men are more polite than Brazilian men.

today I went to the disco for visiting old friends. And I got very embarassed because it's very narrow there so you have to rub girl's asses to go your way. (and many of them are also students in my highschool years)

That's very embarrassing to me so I left early, is this also sexism?

Not all Chinese men are polite. but most Chinese men are shy to express their thoughts about women's appearance, face to face. even when he really thinks this women very attractive. sometimes they would express their compliments in a playful way. and that's still precious Very Happy

Ah Clarissa, I long knew you are a genius. And your daughter looks very cherubic. Actually I like girls. You can buy them pretty dresses, dolls and other girly playthings. I miss this fun in my life. I don't like the toys boys play with, somehow.

My sister has a daughter, but I can't play with her too as she is in the USA. They had visited earlier this year, and I had a nice time with the yearling. I'm encouraging them to return to India, but they seem to be quite happy in the USA.

As for feeling happy on being complimented on one's looks, I think it's only natural. But I read that women resent being treated as "objects", whereas men don't Wink .

This topic has changed from Parents' sex bias toward their kids to how women feel when men compliment them. that's interesting. Very Happy

So, none can tell us why most parents would originally want boy babies over girl babies Question anyone?

Thanks for the kind words, Anuradha. Well, I agree with you and Red Rose that being complimented on the way you look can be something good and natural, but it's up to the context.

Being complimented by your boss is always something a little bit embarassing: 1) if you react in a bad way (frowning at him, for example Mad ), he might get resentful--and it may pose a threat to your job; 2) if you react in a good way (a half smile, for example Rolling Eyes), he might feel encouraged to go further in making comments on your looks.

That's why, most of the time, I pretend not to hear it. That's what most women do.

In time, the Chinese preference for boys will result in the value of girls being raised.
If there is a big imbalance Chinese men will search for women from other parts of the world.
The rarer something is, the more it is valued.
If you could find diamonds among gravel stones they would be worth nothing.

You make my day, asterix. that's good news.

according to the rule: The rarer something is, the more it is valued., then my daughter will get more admirers when she grows up Very Happy

I just told her about the good news, she said:"I don't think I need more admirers in the future."

"but why not?" asked I.

"dealing with those admirers will waste too much time. but I just wanna spend time with the guy whom I like" answered she.

wow! I can't believe what I just heard. she is only 8!
