I understand why "everybody laughed" - because in reality, probably very few people did.

A large percentage of the laughter you hear in American Sitcoms is a "laugh track." It is a recording of random laughter that is put into the soundtrack after taping, and before broadcasting, to make the viewer feel that the audience thought it was funny.

This works on the viewer similar to when you see someone yawn - then you yawn as well. You hear the laugh track and you perceive the show to be more entertaining than it actually is.

You mean canned laughter? No! Friends didn't seem to use canned laughter.

remember? when Pheobe, Rachel, Joey all know about Monic and Chandler's secret, Pheobe decides to mess up with Chandler? everytime when Pheobe makes a "move", a few audiences can't help screaming and shouting; and when Monic comes out from the bothroom, she says:"I love you too Chandler." the audiences all said:"oh~~~~~!"

That didn't seem like canned laughter to me

Not all of it.

They add it where they don't get as much reaction as they want.

ClarissaMach, I guess you are also a big fan of FRIENDS, ain't ya? Laughing if so, then we are in the same boat!!

I have watched Friends for MANY times(I have a whole series of Friends in my computer, including VCDS, script, interview, the data of cast), but I still can't get rid of it!

The whole cast and directors, writers of Friends are just talented!

Oh, yeah, I'm addicted to some American TV Shows like "Friends", "Seinfeld", "Medium" and "CSI".
