get a kick out of

- enjoy

I think that my father got a kick out of seeing his old school friend.

Go to google and type in "get a kick" idiom.

To add to the excellent explanations, Vin 21, there is a song made famous by Frank Sinatra called I get a Kick Out of You.

Here are the words:

I get no kick from champagne
Mere alcohol doesnt thrill me at all
So tell me why should it be true
That I get a kick out of you.

Some they may go for cocaine
Im sure that if, I took even one sniff
It would bore me terrifically too
But I get a kick out of you.

I get a kick every time I see you standing there before me
I get a kick though its clear to see, you obviously do not adore me

I get no kick in a plane
Flying too high with some gal in the sky
Is my idea of nothing to do
But I get a kick out of you

Kick can be used in many ways. For example:

To get a kick means to get a feeling of excitement or pleasure:
To become involved with Daves ESL Caf is a real kick for me.

To get a kick out of/from something:
I get a real kick out of seeing my children do well in school.

You can do something for kicks:
I just play the guitar for kicks - I'm not very good at it.

To get your kicks from something, to do something, especially something bad, because it gives a feeling of excitement or pleasure:
My teacher got his kicks from beating his pupils..
