Is there a difference between *displace* and *replace*?

displaced means that people could no longer live in their house because it was shattered - displaced - by the hurricane. (displaced does not mean shattered, but there was nothing to go back to so they had to go somewhere else).

replaced means that my 12 year old dog got hit by a car and died, so i got a new one, replaced him, with a puppy who looks just like the old one.
