to me (in America), they are different.
cornerstone - your mother is the cornerstone of the family. she keep the family together; she is the emotional support, the family scheduler (she knows where everyone is and what everyone is doing), the one who everyone comes to (including your friends) when there is a problem and helps solve them, she is the rock of the family. when she's no longer there, the cornerstone is broken.
milestone - many people say that becoming forty years of age is a milestone in your life. others say that 50, or 65 are additional milestones...that turning point in your life when your maturity level has changed and you think differently about life.
