(1) You shouldn't mess with that guy.
What's the meaning of "mess with"?
(2) It was still rather expensive, and I needed to get some wear out of it .
What's the meaning of "to get some wear out of it"?

1- the sentence is saying that for your own protection, you should not approach that guy because he will probably physically hurt you.
2 - the expensive object is made well, with good materials. the person is not ready to discard the item because he/she feels that because the item was expensive, they could use the item for much longer...similar to the phrase getting my money's worth.
