The parachute *snapped closed* and he plunged to the ground.

how?maybe the wind blew in from another direction?

when a jumper is about to land on the ground, or water, the parachute makes a snapping sound and closes on impact.

i've only seen it in the movies...i'd never do it myself. i like my feet on the ground! iitimone7

It means the parachute malfunctioned and he probably did a roman candle into the ground.
A roman candle is slang for when the parachute doesn't open and trails unopened and ineffectively behind the parachutist.
