You notice people checking you out, doing a double-take, and you're a little perplexed until someone sidles up to you and asks.....

Definitions:

delayed reaction of surprise: a reaction of surprise or astonishment after an initial hesitation

What is that?

To do a double take is when you notice something but at first do not take notice of its importance/weirdness/humor/etc. After only a moment, you realize the importance and refocus your attention to it... Often, you see something, look away, and then look back intently. The looking twice is where the "double" comes from. The "taking it in" (looking closely) is where the "take" comes from (I suppose).

Ex.: You're reading some long boring document because you have to. You're having trouble concentrating because it's so boring. You're brain is not even comprehending the words you are reading, only your eyes are taking them (the words) in. Well into the document, you read "Failure to heed these instructions will result in your immediate termination from this job." You're now on the next sentence or two, and you suddenly think, "Did I really just read that?" You go back and read it carefully. You just did a double take.

Most often, I think, double takes happen when you're out on the street.
