20. a green card is a piece of paper issued by the government whic allows people to stay in a country where they do not live for a longer period of time than a vacation. example - i am a US citizen. if i want to live and work in Sctoland, i would have to apply for a green card which gives me permission to live and work there, and not become a citizen there, or to stay long enough to get my citizenship.
21. a broiler is a small drawer in the bottom of the stove that cooks at a very high temperature. in US, ovens cook at 250-450 degrees f, and a broiler cooks at 500-550 degrees f.
22. i would say "i can't get a hold of it' meaning that i cannot get a grip on something. example - since my hands were wet, i could not hold the plastic bag and open it at the same time because it was slipping out of my fingers.
23. be there or be square is an expression that means that i can plan for you to be there in a timely fashion, or be square means to be someone that i can't count on (or to be a loser). you would only use this expression when talking to close friends...NOT your boss.
24. WalMart is a very large grocery store, clothing store, garden supply store, automobile parts store, toy store, pharmacy, barber shop, and bank all in one building. there are separate departments (just listed) for each of the items and they are very organized. between 100-150 employees work there each day.
25. Godparents are usually good friends or relatives are sort of like second parents to a child. they have no legal ties to the child in case anything happens to the parents, but they go to the same church as the child, live in the same neighborhood as the child, or same community. i am a godparent to a little boy at my church.
26. most people are called by their first name, but in some cases, if you are named after a parent or grandparent and you really don't like the name, you can choose to be called by your middle name. on legal documents, your first name is always your first name, your middle name is you middle name...etc.
time for class...iitimone7
