At a local discussion group in Beijing our leader gave us the subject of Sex Education to talk about. There were ten of us, six girls and four boys, all around the age of 26 to 30. All of us were brought up in ignorance of sex, especially where babies came from or how they were made. One boy told us when he asked his mother about this she told him he was born from under her armpit. One girl was told that parents went to the well and got a baby from there. One girl said she was told that the doctor brought a baby to the house for the parents. Most of the others were refused any information when they asked. We all had to find out about such matters from secret talk with friends.

It became clear that one girl aged 26 still knew very little about how babies were made and where they came from. One other girl admitted she got married without knowing anything about sex or what to do when she was taken to bed. It took her a long time to get used to the sex act because she thought it was sinful.

In my case when I was 16 I asked my mother how babies were made she got very angry and told my father. He beat my bottom very hard for a long time because he said I was talking dirty.

Why are Chinese parents so reluctant to talk about sex to their children?

Have you had such experiences?

wow, your father is stern and conservative. I think many people would learn this from their class. I don't remember if I had asked such question or not, but many parents would tell their children"when you get older you would know about this".

I agree. A person would have to live alone in a cave not to learn by their teen years that sex makes babies. But the full information is not popped on you all at once. It comes gradually as the child grows and can handle different levels of detail.
When I was 4 years old, my mom was pregnant with my brother, so naturally I learned that babies grow in mommy's tummy, and that boobs are somehow related to feeding the baby, but I wasn't sure of the technical details at the time. But it was sufficient for a rugrat's brain.

Later on, one could watch "after school specials", mini dramas like "My Mom's Having a Baby" that did not provide a lot of technical information (again aimed at young ignorant minds) but did reinforce the idea that babies came out of women and somehow the fathers were involved.

In school biology class, starting in later elementary school or junior high, kids might learn the basics of sexual reproduction in general terms as it relates to plants and animals. That is, they might learn that males produce sperm and females produce eggs, fish mix them this way, plants mix them that way, birds and mammals mix them another way, and here's how the young are produced.

In high school biology you get more into meiosis and mitosis, dominant and reccessive genes, etc. Technical details of sexually transmitted disease might be touched on in cell biology class. Some schools might offer a condom application instruction in a general health and hygeine class. Guys find access to porn and girls discover romance novels.

By university level biology class, you learn the fundamentals of mammalian physiology, estrogen and progesterone cycles, protein markers on egg and sperm cells (why different species don't join, why is only one sperm allowed inside the egg), what is the sperm tail made of, blastocysts and zygotes, fetal development, and how various methods of contraception are used to interupt these.

Dear Bob S

The other alternative to living in a cave is to live in China. Life here is very different from the USA. You had the benefit of education about sex in school and parents who were broadminded. There is no such sex education in schools, and few, if any, broadminded parents.

It seems to me that as far as Chinese culture is concerned you are living in a cave.

The USA may be free with information about sex in schools but it has its collection of weird laws about sex. In Arizona keeping more than two dildos at home is prohibited. In Florida only the position "man on top" is legally allowed but it is not allowed to kiss womans bust during sexual intercourse. In Massachusetts the "woman on top" is also not allowed. In Minnesota sex with birds is strictly prohibited. In Ohio women are not allowed to wear lacquered shoes because their underwear can be seen on their "mirror" surface.

But in Massachusettes it is legal to marry the same sex. I wonder how it is determined who is allowed to be on top. Laughing

Bob, obviously, you don't know Chinese cultural background, especially, about sex education.

What Cathy said is absolutely true in China. I admit that our culture about sex is kinda hypocritical. if you talk about sex too much, people would think you are a pervert, even when you talk about it normally. I am a Doctor, I exactly know where were babies from since I attended a madical college at age 17. but when I was a child, I asked my mom where I was from, Mum told me that she bought me from supermarket, babies on sale. and when we were high school students, we had a class entitled physical health in which there were some contents about sex education. But teachers never taught us about this part. I once asked my teacher:"teacher, on our textbook, I saw an illustration on which a baby was trapped in a pack, what is that about?" My teacher shouted at me out loud:"stop talking about nonsense! you are a girl, please behave well!" I got confused:"then you mean, a boy can ask you about this? and a boy is allow to behave worse? I just asked you some question, I didn't behave bad." she shouted again:"shame on you! don't talk about this anymore!" actually, that illustration was just about a baby in an uterus.

You see, that's what happened in my high school. now the situation is a little bit openner than ever. But sex education is still a forbidden zone. People tend to think that sex is something nasty.

However, as you know, Chinese population is the hugest in the world. where are these people from? since sex is so nasty, where did we get these babies? of course, from sex. nevertheless, since sex is so nasty, and we have so many babies... the only possibility would be: we feel nauseous and uncomfortable when we have sex! but in order to make people, we have to suffer from love-making.! Isn't that delirious??

That is why I think that hypocritical sex culture is ridiculous.

That's rather opinion, isn't it?
However, I think it's good that we don't know it at first.
Because, if you look at the many german girls here who are about 14/15 and have a big stomach (with baby inside), you could perhaps guess the disadvantage.

Yeah, there are all kinds of strange nonsense "Blue Laws" on the books in various cities and states. Mostly they are ignored since legislatures lack time or will to bother clearing them off the books. For example, did you know it was illegal for Deaf people to use sign language in Berkley, CA? (At least I think it was Berkley.) But what rational person would actually try to stop them?
Here's a link to an article about them in the Pittsburg Post-Gazette:
"Blue laws won't fade away"
Enjoy.

Well, there's a difference between knowing about sex and knowing about reproduction. IMHO, young people today are far too knowledgeable about the former but woefully ignorant about the latter. In former days when much of society was more agrarian, any farm kid, boy or girl, could tell you that bull + cow = calf, or rooster + hen = chick (and they may have even seen the process once or twice).
Growing up, my family didn't have a farm, but we did have a female cat that wasn't spayed. When she was in heat and the toms would come around, well, cats are not shy or quiet about their copulation. Shocked And the next thing you know, we got a litter of kittens running around the garage. Rolling Eyes

Is it true? A land where people don't know about sex till they are in their 20's? Can I send my daughter there?! Wink
Hmmm, I had hear such stories before about Chinese sex ed (or lack thereof), for example about a young newlywed couple who didn't have sex for years because they knew nothing about it but went to the doctor for help anyway when the wife wasn't getting pregnant. At the time I heard it, I didn't think the story was true, but now I wonder.

Oh, Bob! Who said that China was a land where people don't know about sex till they are in their 20's? Nobody. What was discussed was the lack of sex education -- the lack of understanding about penetrative sex.

Most Chinese kids know about sex (what can be called heavy petting) and many Chinese kids know about coitus (hence the considerable number of unwanted pregnancies) But most kids are ignorant about conception or contraception. This is why abortions are so commonplace and so easy to get in China.

Many Chinese kids indulge in penetrative sex before marriage but far too many do not associate this with the creation of life. It comes as a shock when the girl finds herself pregnant because so many do not associate intercourse with pregnancy and know next to nothing about contraception.

Yes, your explanation totally makes sense.

Sometimes I always can't express myself well, due to my poor English.
