Hello, everyone.

The following is from a mock test for the national university entrance exam, the Japanese version of SAT in the U.S.
.
Which word has the heaviest stress, (1), (2), (3), or (4), when the underlined sentence in the dialogue below is read out loud?
(1) Youre (2) staying (3) in (4) Japan

(Judy, who is an exchange student from the U.S., bumps into her classmate Akira on her way home from school.)
Judy: Hi, Akira! Are you going home, too?
Akira: No, Im going to Juku.
Judy: Juku? Oh, you mean a cram school. But its already seven. Do you mean youre going to study this late?
Akira: Of course. Two thirds of the class go to Juku.
Judy: Really? I didnt know that. Japanese do like to study.
Akira: We have to study in order to go to a good university. Youre only staying in Japan for a month. You dont know how lucky you are!
Judy: Yes, but Ill have to start applying to colleges when I get back. I graduate in May!
Akira: Is it true that it is easier to get into college in America than in Japan?
Judy: Yes, thats true. But its harder to graduate than in Japan. You have to study hard and write a lot of essays.
Akira: I see. I guess neither way is easy.

Any comment would be appreciated.

Best regards,
fw

Hello, FW.

You wrote (in part):

Comments:

The complete sentence that you are referring to seems to be this one:

"Youre only staying in Japan for a month."

In that sentence, I would say that month receives the heaviest stress. I would also say that you're, staying, and Japan receive secondary stress.

Best wishes

D. Oliver
