Would it still mean the same thing if I replaced the are with were?

MsD, you need "goings-on" and "reminisce about."

It could be either, but "are" is probably what you want. If after that school year you reminisced, but no longer do now, then "were" is what you need. If you continue to reminisce today, then "are" is what you need. Although what you reminisce about is in the past, the reminiscing is in the present.
