Which is more natural, #1 or #2, for the blank below?

The doctor did all he ( ) to cure her of her disease.
1. could do
2. could

I will choose " could " I think it sounds more natural
In this case, " could do" sounds so lame .
" The doctor did all he (could do ) to cure her of her disease"
Hummmnn can u see " did " and " do" ?! It makes the sentence sound lame
So i think" could" is the good choice . It's just wat i think . Lets see how about other people in ESL Smile

I agree that #2 is correct. However, it wouldn't be unusual to hear #1 spoken in American English.
