Hello everyone.

An English-Japanese dictionary at hand says that #1 is appropriate but that #2 is not.

It was only in recent times that air pollution came to be viewed as a ( ) threat to health.
1. major
2. great

What do you think?

Best regards,
fw

I have been a native speaker for 40 years or so, and I would not say that neither 1. or 2. are in appropriate. YOu couls use them both.

If you want to measure a threat, you can say it is "Great".

I may prefer to say that a threat is "major" if i was comparing it to other threats, but I would not agree with this japanese dictionary

Thank you, ab.

How about the sentence below that I have translated from a sentence in Japanese?

"AIDS is one of the greatest threats facing human beings today."

Is this natural? Or should it have been something like "...one of the most serious threats..."?

Sincerely,
fw
