it could mean that the musical note is on the page, but it is not played, OR that it was a hig note that someone decided to play in a lower key.

When the beats drop, that's when the rythym/drums start playing in the song.
Listen to the song 'Perfect Gentleman' by Wyclef Jean
As the song starts, there's a melody playing but no drums. Wyclef is speaking over the melody saying something like "This one goes out to the strip joints etc etc"
As he reaches the end of his introduction, he says 'Turn up my symphony, man ... turn up my symphony ... drop a beat!' - at that point, the drums kick in and the song takes off.
Lots of songs start like this - a gentle melody, a soft introduction ... then the beat drops.
