I am Italian and after "collective nouns" in my language we use a singular verb, what should I do with English?
For example: my family is or my family are? My band is or my bad are?
Thanks Ilaria |

My family IS.
My band IS.
But... in Italian "la gente" is followed by a singular verb.
in English "people" is followed by a plural verb.
Hmmm... I hope that helps a little, atleast.
P.S. Italy is a beautiful country. |

Yes, but I have a friend in Australia who used "my family are"... that was confusing, also my teacher said both are right...
Thanks, yes, Italy is beautiful

| JuanValdez gave you the American English answer. I never knew it was done differently in other English-speaking places until I started visiting forums like this. |

| In my opinion, "My family IS ..." is correct. .Especially in TOEFL preparing course, they indicated that family is count noun means one family, two families, etc. |
