here in China. nobody would tell bless you when people sneeze. but we have a superstitious saying: if a puppy sneezes, then the weather will get unclouded. therefore, when a person sneezes, we would like to make joke with him/her. and we would say: thank you, it seems that we will have a perfect weather! In spanish, or at least in my coutry, we say "Salud!" which means health. It seems to me that the most logic explanation for this is that the person who tells it to you wants you to be healthy.

And with the "bless you"-thing that might be because the christians think that if 'God blesses you' you'll be healthy and away from danger, I guess. I'm not sure, though... since I'm not christian. But I can tell you my own hypothesis.

Bye! Very Happy

now i am telling you the story of it...
As i told before according to one story , the saying started with st. Gregory, who used to say it during a terrible plague.the plague was a dreadful disease transmitted by rats and there was no cure for it.The first sympton of this fatal disease was a sneeze. So if any one started sneezing during the time of a plague,it was almost certain that you would die.......

BLESS YOU ALL Wink Twisted Evil

If you prefer, you can say gesundheit. I don't know about the U.K., but in the U.S., because of its immigration background, most people know it as an option to say after someone sneezes.
