Dear Teachers,

1.- Did you come home safely last night?
- Did you go home safely last night?

- Which sentence is right?

2. If you’re finished here.
- This means “If you have finished everything here”, right?

3. I’m done with this.
- This means “I have finish this”, right?

4. - Are you understanding?
- Don’t you get that?

- Which sentence is right?

5. Does “look out!” mean “watch out!”?

6. He’s beating the hell out of me.

- What does this mean?

Thanks a lot to Teachers.

#1 depends on where you are. If you are home, then you say come. If you are somewhere else, then you say go.

#2 Yes

#3 Yes

#4 I would understand both, but they both sound a little strange to me (North American English). "Are you understanding" actually sounds a little condescending. "Don't you get that?" I usually say "Don't you get it?"

#5 Yes

#6 Two things.
Physically, he is fighting (hitting, kicking, etc) you and he is winning (you are probably bloody Smile )
Other, maybe playing a video game, he has 20 kills and you have 1 kill. He is then beating the hell out of you (winning)

I hope this helps.

Just a quick side comment.

With sentence #1 nither choice sound natural to me. could be regional I suppose.

I think of this idea as...

Did you get home safely last night?

Just a thought - Kristi

Hey Kristea, I agree with the "go" home, I would say "get", but if I heard,
"Did you come home safely last night?" I wouldn't think twice about it. Funny, eh?

Smile
