Definitions:
1. astonish somebody: to amaze or delight somebody ( often used in the passive )
2. knock something or somebody down accidentally: to knock something or somebody down, especially accidentally during a headlong rush
Does any meaning fit in the sentence?

#1 would be the meaning of that sentence in my opinion. Definitely not #2.
The Chinese were "amazed, astonished" by the ancient noodle find. _________________ I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.
